Training Grants and Support

The Leaders of Worship and Preachers Trust: ‘Vocational grants are available to those who need financial assistance in order to enable them to pursue their vocation in ministry, including to those in the early stages of exploring their calling to preach.’

The Tim Burke Memorial Fund: ‘Grants to ordinands and candidates for ministry for one-off expenses such as travel/placements and books/equipment—not for general living expenses incurred during training. Applications in writing only, not via email—requests will be sent an application form.’

The St Boniface Trust ‘is a small charity established to advance the Christian Religion in accordance with the principles of the Anglican faith in all parts of the world, especially for the provision of education and training of clergy and lay people by the award of scholarships and maintenance allowance or any purpose concerning their spiritual or temporal welfare’.

The Clergy Support Trust Library gives ordinands free access to a library of over 1,200 ebooks from SPCK, IVP, and Apollos publishers.

The Church Times offers a free subscription to Anglican Ordinands.


Several organization offers grants to those of a particular theological conviction. These include:

The Anglo-Catholic Ordination Candidates Fund ‘provides a grant on an annual basis for ordinands whilst in theological training’. The Fund may also offer assistance with course fees where these are not covered by the Church. Applicants ‘must be committed to the traditional catholic understanding of the priesthood and episcopate’.

The Cleaver Ordination Candidates Fund, which offers ‘book grants to ordinands in training, which are intended to assist them in assembling a library of theological books which will have lasting value for life-long study and reference, and to support the recipients’ ministry of preaching and teaching’. The Fund may also offer assistance with course fees where these are not covered by the Church. Applicants ‘must be committed to the traditional catholic understanding of the priesthood and episcopate’.


The following organizations provide grants to assist with the cost of pastoral placements, including placements overseas:

The Saint George’s Trust offers grants to ordinands ‘to assist with the costs
of pastoral placements that are part of formation’.

Fellowship of the Maple Leaf: ‘Individual travel grants for study and cross-cultural experiences. These are available to Canadian church-people visiting the UK and church-people from the UK visiting Canada.’

The Philip Usher Memorial Fund ‘funds a scholarship scheme which enables students to spend a period of time in a country in which part of the population practises the Christian religion according to the doctrine and ritual of the Eastern Orthodox Church, allowing the scholar to study the outlook and mode of life of such part of the population.’

Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide: ‘Our Intercultural Encounter programme offers bursaries that enable recipients to spend a sustained period of time in a Christian community in a culture other than their own.’ Currently (2023) suspended due to the Covid pandemic.
